AABE Virginia Chapter Meeting on Cybersecurity by Mr. Felek Abbas

September 11, 2014

The Virginia Chapter of AABE had its General Body meeting on Thursday, September 11, 2014 at Dominion’s One James River Plaza building.  Chapter members had the opportunity to have professional head shots taken during the Members and Guests Networking, before the meeting.

Updates to the approximately 40 members and guests included a calendar of remaining AABE Virginia Chapter events through the end of the year, “Members-On-The-Move”, Clothes Drive, Legislative Issues and Public Policy, and more were presented at the meeting.

The pinnacle of the meeting was the informative and timely presentation on Cyber Security by Mr. Felek Abbas, Critical Infrastructure Protection Compliance Auditor, of the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (“NERC”).

To highlight a few items from Mr. Abbas’ presentation, he transitioned members and guests on understanding the complexity and importance of Cybersecurity by sharing recent news events to utilities, retail establishments, and entertainment.  He also shared:

  • NERC’s mission
  • Overview of Critical Infrastructure Protection (“CIP”) Standards
  • Discussion of CIP Version 5
  • Bulk Electric System (“BES”) Cyber Asset and BES Cyber System
  • Additional NERC Cybersecurity Activity

The presentation was concluded with an engaged question and answer session.

Please mark your calendars for the next Chapter Body meeting that is scheduled for November 6, 2014.
