Washington, D.C. — The American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE) is calling on Congress to fully fund the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) at $5.1 billion to address rising energy costs and growing economic hardship. In a letter sent today to Senate and House Appropriations leaders, AABE highlighted the urgent need for expanded assistance, as current funding covers only 20% of eligible households, leaving a $17 billion gap between resources and demand.
“Energy insecurity affects millions, but Black households are disproportionately impacted, facing a 43% higher energy burden and increased risk of disconnection,” said Commissioner Emeritus California Public Service Commission Timothy Alan Simon, Chairman of AABE Legislative Issues & Public Policy (LIPP) Committee. “LIHEAP engages historically underserved communities through energy management services taking control of the other side of the utility meter by reducing consumption. It is also critical to keeping families safe, employed, and financially stable.”
AABE is also launching a Charitable Energy Platform, a private-sector initiative to supplement federal aid by mobilizing energy providers, corporations, and charities to support struggling families.
“We need a dual approach—stronger federal funding and innovative private solutions,” said Ralph Cleveland, AABE President & CEO. “Congress must act now to protect vulnerable customers.”
