American Association of Blacks in Energy Sponsors Energy and Climate Change Summit

January 27, 2010

On January 28th, the American Association of Blacks in Energy (AABE) will host an Energy and Climate Change Summit in Washington, DC. The Summit is the first of its kind conversation around energy issues and its impact on communities of color. Various stakeholders will convene at this one day event to discuss these issues and begin to draft a set of principles. “Energy and climate change have been at the forefront of our national agenda for the last year”, said Frank Stewart, President and COO of the association. “This summit is an opportunity for our groups to get together to discuss the issues and their impact on our communities. While each of the participants may have a different viewpoint, we believe that having a dialogue where we can identify not only those points of difference, but also those points where we agree is the only way to ensure that communities of color are treated equitably.”

Majority Whip James Clyburn will open the event as the keynote speaker.  "We are excited to have the Congressman join us to share his thoughts on energy policy and the direction it wll take over the coming year", said Mr. Stewart.  Other featured speakers include: Carol Browner, Assistant to the President for Energy and Climate, White House Office for Energy and Climate Change Policy; Michael Strautmanis, Chief of Staff to the Assistant to the President for Intergovernmental Affairs and Public Engagement, White House Office of Public Engagement; and Philip Sharp, President, Resources for the Future.

More than fifteen (15) stakeholder groups including the National Urban League, the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the Black Chamber of Commerce, the Conference of Black Mayors, the American Association of Retired Persons, African American Environmentalist Association and the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies have confirmed their participation.
