AABE Atlanta Awards Scholarships totaling $35,000
to 38 Students in Metro Atlanta
ATLANTA – June 4, 2014 – The Atlanta chapter of the American Association of Blacks in Energy® (AABE®) awarded 38 metro Atlanta students with scholarships to further their education. Students who excelled in math, science and physical science were presented with awards totaling more than $35,000.
“AABE is committed to supporting students, especially those committed to serving their communities and who have an interest in pursuing STEM-related careers,” said Rodney J. Russell, president of AABE Atlanta. “Each year we make our scholarship program a priority because we understand that investing in students positively impacts our industry.”
Scholarships were offered to two groups of students: 21 high school graduates and 17 college students who were previous recipients of the award. Each high school awardee will be eligible to apply for the continuing education award, provided they meet eligibility requirements.
“The Atlanta chapter is celebrating its 20th year of recognizing deserving students with scholarships that will help support their educational aspirations,” said Valerie Searcy, chair of the AABE scholarship committee. “We want to help create additional opportunities for students to excel in science, technology, engineering and math, and we have seen many talented students go on to have successful careers in energy. “
Approximately 150 guests attended the 20th Annual James K. Davis scholarship award banquet in May.
With more than 130 members from 30 utilities, distributors, infrastructure providers, and other energy-related companies, the Atlanta Chapter is one of 10 AABE chapters in the Southeast region. AABE is a national association of energy professionals founded and dedicated to ensure the input of African Americans and other minorities into the discussions and developments of energy policies, regulations, research and development technologies, and environmental issues.
