February 2013 News

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, recently commented on the Energy Security Trust that President Obama proposed in the State of the Union:
"There is an idea I may agree with in the president’s State of the Union address – an Energy Security Trust. I proposed this idea in my Energy 20/20 blueprint that I released last week. Under my Advanced Energy Trust Fund proposal, new production on previously-closed federal lands could provide a substantial source of new revenue to fund research on the most promising new energy technologies, while paying down the national debt. I intend to get to work on this as soon as possible."
Murkowski is the ranking Republican on the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee.
This month we feature AABE Members speaking about some of the key issues that affect the AABE Mission.

The next two decades will see billions of square feet of new construction and remodeled facilities across the U.S.—homes, offices, public facilities, and whole communities.
The potential exists to make these facilities far more efficient than current codes require, and to work synergistically to make entire communities energy efficient. However, more knowledge is needed to predict what the actual potential is, as well as what it would take, in terms of technologies, strategies, and policies, to achieve that potential.

AABE recently met with Ambassador Johnnie Carson and the Constituency for Africa. The discussion centered around sharing insight and observations about how each organization's mission and members can do more to help shape a strong and credible US Africa policy.
The Constituency for Africa (CFA) was founded in 1990, when a group of concerned Africanists, interested citizens and Africa-focused organizations developed a strategy to build organized support for Africa in the United States.
CFA was charged with educating the U.S. public about Africa and U.S. policy on Africa; mobilizing an activist constituency for Africa; and fostering cooperation among a broad-based coalition of American, African and international organizations, and individuals committed to the progress and empowerment of Africa and African people.

AABE local chapters review the applications received and select local scholarship winners, from which the top ranked candidates are forwarded to the National Scholarship Committee for consideration of regional and national awards.
Encourage the students in your life to apply.

Like many firms before it, Google has come to realize that policy and regulation are the biggest obstacles to grid modernization. As Michael Terrell, one of the firm's senior lobbyists explains on a company blog, "the challenge is that the rules governing electricity distribution were written for last century’s grid."

Thank you to everybody who made the 2013 AABE Energy Policy Summit such a success. The dialogue and the policy outcomes from the session will help guide us forward as we seek to elevate the awareness about how energy policy affects our diverse audience.
