A Message from Paula Jackson, AABE Interim President and CEO:
ENERGY: Embracing Change and Creating Opportunity
Paula Jackson, President of AABE

In a fast moving world with shifting new business models, new technologies and evolving environments the only constant is CHANGE.

I am excited to serve as your Interim President and CEO as our organization goes through a period of profound Change. Last year, our Chairman shared a strategic plan which built against a vision and framework originally laid out 36 years ago by our founding members.

One year later, we continue to work through that plan. In order to succeed this organization must embrace change, and by doing so we will grow our membership, strengthen our financial health and increase our legislative influence.

By embracing change we will ensure opportunities for our communities to participate in this industry from the development of policy, to developing young leaders and promoting more of our businesses as providers of the goods and services our industry uses.

In just a couple of weeks, the AABE’s 36th Annual Conference,
“Embracing Change and Creating Opportunities” will take place in Baltimore, MD. This year’s conference planning committee has done an excellent job developing an agenda which describes the changes and challenges our industry will face, but they also bring together industry leaders to offer solutions.

The conference keynote speaker, Daniel Yergin, is a leading energy scholar, Pulitzer Prize winning author who Fortune Magazine called “one of the planet’s foremost thinkers about energy and its implications.” I know that Dr. Yergin will set the stage for a terrific conference.

Additionally, we’ll be joined by Ambassador Andrew Young, former Congressman, Mayor of Atlanta and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Ambassador Young has a wealth of knowledge that you will find informative and thought provoking. If you haven’t already done so, I encourage you to REGISTER for this year’s conference. It’s one you don’t want to miss.

As we move through a conference that looks at change in the industry, and an organization which is sure to change, my question for you is what role do you want to play in the AABE story? I am most excited about the opportunity to lead at a time so important to our organization. Because I believe that if we Embrace Change it will Create Opportunity.

Best,

Paula R. Jackson

AABE Member and Con Edison Employee Allison Skeete Witnesses History

On the Martin Luther King holiday, those working on the first floating holiday for management employees under the new vacation policy were invited to witness the second inauguration of President, Barack Obama, in the auditorium at 4 Irving Place. While many employees participated in the weekend’s Power of Giving and National Day of Service activities honoring Dr. King’s legacy, few were aware that among the estimated nearly one million spectators gathered at the foot of the U.S. Capitol’s steps was Con Edison employee Allison Skeete, associate analyst, Gas Conversion Group, and her husband.

Allison, a 25-year veteran of Con Edison, and a member of the National Association of Black Journalists, covered the swearing in ceremony of the 44th President of the United States as a freelancer. Not her first trip to an inauguration, Allison and her husband, a freelance photographer, attended the ceremony four years ago.

Allison’s Story “Obama’s Second Term: Views from the Street on Inauguration Day,” was picked up by Network Journal Magazine, a publication that has honored several Con Edison women at its annual 25 Influential Black Women in Business luncheon.

She says this inauguration experience was different than her first trip. “The crowds were smaller, and there were more families with children,” she explains, “It didn’t have the same feeling of urgency as the first time. But it was life changing all the same. To see the president of the United States take the oath of office is historic, to witness it with my husband at my side, it’s hard to put into words how incredible it was.”
