Chapters on the Move

ATLANTA CHAPTER: Southern Africa Power Pool

Delegates from several Southern African countries recently visited Georgia Power headquarters on a best practices and fact-finding mission for Energy Trading.

The delegates were from member countries of the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) representing: Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Tanzania, South Africa, Lesotho, and Swaziland.

ATLANTA CHAPTER: Southern Africa Power Pool

Founded in 1995, SAPP is a cooperation of the national electricity companies of the countries listed above. The agency does business under the auspices of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and the member companies have created common power grid between their countries and a common market for electricity in the SADC region.

The delegates specifically wanted to examine the standards and trends in the United States for developing an Energy Trading model and Balancing Ancillary services market. SAPP is hoping to develop something similar in their region.

Professor Shi-Jie Deng, Ph.D. from Georgia Institute of Technology, gave a presentation on energy pricing and hedging in competitive power markets. The group also visited Southern Company’s Energy Trading Floor in Birmingham, Alabama.

Atlanta Chapter member Carlton Blue and Marjorie Jean-Pierre from the U.S. Energy Association coordinated the visit. Blue, along with Walter Dukes, Georgia Power SVP, and other Atlanta Chapter members, hosted the delegation for the energy program and networking reception.
