June 2013 News
As we look ahead to the rest of the year, I want to take some time to thank all of you who participated and attended the AABE 36th Annual Conference last month in Baltimore. “Embracing Change and Creating Opportunities” was a terrific experience that included informative discussion, keen observations about our industry and a look ahead toward our goal of becoming an even stronger voice in the policy and practical discussions surrounding energy.
Among the many highlights from the conference, I think the keynote speech by Daniel Yergin, the frank but enlightened discussion with Ambassador Andrew Young and the panel discussions that took place all helped to inform and inspire more than (NEED THE NUMBER) members in attendance. For those members who could not attend, know that your dedication to our mission and your hard work in your area are leading us to an exciting new chapter in the history of AABE.
Scholarship and the importance of identifying the next generation of energy professionals was also an important element of our conference. I want to thank all of the scholarship recipients and all of the AABE members whose dedication and effort to identify these worthy candidates is reflected in the excellence that these young students carry forward on their academic journey.
We are at a historic crossroad in the history of AABE. The energy debate and the economic challenges that face our community require our strength and our voice to ensure future prosperity across all audiences. Our AABE Strategic Plan is our roadmap to lead our association forward to speak for those who neither have a voice nor a seat at the table in terms of national policy discussion. Our success is our community’s success.
Our combined success involves all of us not only to fulfill our immediate milestone of moving AABE membership above 2,000 members by year-end but also to fulfill our need to collaborate and coordinate national, regional and local resources to infuse our association with more voices and future leaders. This is a critical time in our history and I am confident that we will work together to secure our success for generations to come.
Now more than ever, embracing change and creating opportunity must remain vital elements of our mission. You can help today by identifying potential new members in your own organizations or within your community. We will work with you to tell the AABE story and to encourage new members to join us as we create a brighter professional and personal pathway for those that come behind us. Let us work together to light their way.
Best,

Paula R. Jackson

On the Martin Luther King holiday, those working on the first floating holiday for management employees under the new vacation policy were invited to witness the second inauguration of President, Barack Obama, in the auditorium at 4 Irving Place. While many employees participated in the weekend’s Power of Giving and National Day of Service activities honoring Dr. King’s legacy, few were aware that among the estimated nearly one million spectators gathered at the foot of the U.S. Capitol’s steps was Con Edison employee Allison Skeete, associate analyst, Gas Conversion Group, and her husband.
Allison, a 25-year veteran of Con Edison, and a member of the National Association of Black Journalists, covered the swearing in ceremony of the 44th President of the United States as a freelancer. Not her first trip to an inauguration, Allison and her husband, a freelance photographer, attended the ceremony four years ago.
Allison’s Story “Obama’s Second Term: Views from the Street on Inauguration Day,” was picked up by Network Journal Magazine, a publication that has honored several Con Edison women at its annual 25 Influential Black Women in Business luncheon.
She says this inauguration experience was different than her first trip. “The crowds were smaller, and there were more families with children,” she explains, “It didn’t have the same feeling of urgency as the first time. But it was life changing all the same. To see the president of the United States take the oath of office is historic, to witness it with my husband at my side, it’s hard to put into words how incredible it was.”

Thank you for your continued membership and hope to see you in Houston.
